Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Best sim available.. but
First of all I would like to say that this is the best sim available (probably ever). While many aspects are very realistic, there are some problems with the flight modelling. The game seems to be very biased. All of the American fighters are a nightmare to fly. For instance, the p-51 and p-47 should be able to fly circles around a 109 at 25k. Wrong. The only advantage are their superior speed at this altitude. In another scenario, while playing online, a fw-190A8 (2500 ft/min in real life) proceded to outclimb my f6f (3500 ft/min in reality) right after takeoff. At these low altitudes, my 2000hp f6f should have left it in the dust. The .50 caliber machine guns are also mysteriously weak. If you disagree with me, set up a single player mission with you in an f6f and a friendly in a fw-190A8. Get yourself within 100 yards of it (directly behind) and try to shoot it down. You will probably waste half of your ammo before you make a dent. The p-38s controls get shot out in 1 hit and if you breathe on the P-40 the wrong way, its engine will burst into flames and the elevators controls will fail. Honest to god, the only decent American planes are the P-39 and the P-63 (probably because they were favored by the game developers country during WWII). The axis teams dominate when playing online. Allies do not even have a chance unless spits are available. I am not saying that the US had the best aircraft during WWII, but there is no way that they were this terrible. Had they been, the allies would have lost the war.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great flight Sim
Il-2 is the absolute best ww2 flight sim when it comes to realism. It not for people who just want to shoot 'em up. You will need to to master take offs, landings, flight instrumentation, navigation and engine control. After that, aerial combat maneuvers will be even more challenging. The air, sea and land scenery is stunning as well as the accuracy of all the aircraft. It is amazing to takeoff in a Grumman Wildcat in the Pacific and have to manually crank a handle to retract the landing gear. These guys did there homework on ALL of the aircraft. Cheers!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Historicaly accurate fun
The Holy Grail of combat flight sims. You can configure the game for anything from arcade shootem up to full on realism with complex engine management, blackouts, headshake, etc... Each plane modelled flies like the real thing with variants within a paticular model displaying different flight characteristics. Fanatical attention to historic detail, they release patches just to change the style of lettering on a guage or the color fo its needle if they didn't get it right the first time. BUY THIS SIM and check out mission4today.com for hundreds of free additional missions, campaigns, and skins. Perfect for gamers and historians alike.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Stellar study of WWII air warfare; & stunning flight simulation to boot!
If I may describe the virtues of IL2:1946 in point form!
- Any one of the IL2 series are among the best air combat simulation software you can currently get for the PC. With IL2:1946 you get the ENTIRE series on a single DVD.
- It is the BEST WWII simulation for air-combat there is.
- It sports a high fidelity physics engine as well as an inbuilt & powerful mission/campaign creation & management utility.
- This is definitely a product that broadens perspective! IL2 is extremely challenging, but the rewards are priceless with regard to an enhanced perspective of some of the challenges experienced by the aviators of that period and some insight into the machines they flew.
- It is buoyed by a legion of user support, with a very active online community.
- It generally runs very well on older PC's (mine is a Dell Dimension 5150 which is over 5 y.o. with high details and high frame-rates), occasional frame-rate hit around airfields and heavy traffic).

My advice is, if you're even slightly interested in FLIGHT or in the WWII period or both; then you should make sure you have your-self a copy of this sublimely marvelous piece of software tech-art. Without a doubt, Oleg Maddox is the modern day equivalent of Michelangelo or any of the Renaissance people.

I noticed there is one review that states you'll need previous copies to install IL2:1946; this is INCORRECT! You only need to purchase and install IL2:1946. It is a standalone product that includes ALL of the previous versions in the IL2 series.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - IL-2 Sturmovik 1946
Great game....My husband had asked for MS Flight Simulator X for his birthday but I came across this instead. He really likes how it is still a flight simulator game but it has the added bonus of being able to dog fight, go on missions, and numerous other features. The graphics are alot better as well. Overall we are very pleased with it and would recommend it as a better alternative to FS X.
