Rating: - The worst link in the HOMM series
If you are a die hard fan of HOMM III (like me), then you might get a short term kick out of this game.
Otherwise, Heroes II, Heroes III, Heroes V are all superior games. So I recommend you go with that route.
My personal favorites are the old school ones (II and III). But there are some good new features in V as well.
Now the review:
Improvements: (Not many, and most of them have a downside)
-The new spell system is cool
-I like some of the new interesting creatures (although there are a lot of great ones missing)
-It also can be a fun dynamic to have the heroes be able to be in the match (yet at times this can be a huge pain as well with people killing off the heroes before any monsters in cheap single shot kills).
Failures:
-The new 3D graphics somehow manage to look worse than the 2D ones in HOMM III
-Missing a lot of elements that made the previous games great
-Way to many bug issues in this game.
-Some combat functionality issues aren't thought through, the hex system is seriously needed here...
-Overall, far fewer creatures and different paths to take for victory.
As a whole, the game is a quick kick. But if you don't get sick of it after a week then you must be too high to notice that the game ultimately sucks...
Rating: - Great game for the money!
This is a great version of the series although I have been told the new one is AWESOME! If you like Heroes and just want play, get it. If you don't mind spending the money, get the new one if your computer can handle it.
Rating: - Knock off
The amazon company sends you the wrong product. They send you a cheap Ubisoft product when it is suppose to be 3DO. So you cannot get expansions for the ubisoft software for this game. Amazon needs to send the correct 3DO version of this game as shown and told to be.
Rating: - A disappointing sequel
Heroes IV was a much awaited sequel of one of the best strategy games ever, Heroes III. The latter, by the way, is a golden game in terms of gameplay. It's so much fun that it was the primary game I was playing for years.
Heroes IV, though features improved graphics and such, lacks any gameplay fun whatsoever. I gave it 2 stars only because I assume that some people can actually enjoy it, despite my opinion. The AI (computer) is not challenging at all. It simply sits in its castles, rarely attacking you, and your whole game consists in basically exploring the map, fighting the monsters (not the AI) until you have enough forces to break the AI in its castles, where he sits accumulating troops. Not much fun if you know how Heroes III feels, where AI constantly challenges you, is aggressive, attacks your in your own castles, etc.
For me, Heroes IV is much more boring because the AI is simply stupid, and AI was the main thing that made Heroes series so much fun to play. Some may say that graphics was not good in previous titles, but graphics were never an issue, i.e. it was always good enough.
In summary, Heroes IV has improved graphics and many new ideas, but poor gameplay (stupid, as if absent AI) and very few maps. If you enjoy turn-based strategies, buy Heroes III, you'll have fun. Of note, heroes V is coming up, and the main hope is that it will resemble heroes III in terms of gameplay.
Rating: - I'll compare it to other non HoM games. (someone needs to)
This was my first PC game ever, on;y 3 years latter did I finnaly get to own my own copy (last compy would have required too many pricy replacements & the install caused a tottal memory loss crash) I've played so many games in those between years, but they were all lacking heavily. This game makes other games boring fast because it offers MORE of everything, but it still has it's downsides. I agree with the pros, though I really don't like those annoying grids from earlier games. The cons for me were the amount of buildings you could create & the restrictions that went with them (you have to give up one type to another) & there just erentenough maps & campaignes. Luckily, the expansion packs should fix that nicely. The combat & magic sound FX were cute, but other games made me somewhat annoyed at the lack of BG music. & that's about it. Technicle support is available on Ubisoft forums, patches can be downloaded anywhere (for technicle fixes), & if you need them, cheats & walkthroughs are plentiful, but even the newest of newbies shouldn't need a walkthrough on this.
